A study, reported by CTV, which deprived a selection of 200 students from their internets and Facebooks and the like for a period of 24 hours, found they felt anxious, frustrated and isolated as a result of the mother-brain disconnect.
They literally NEED all this nonsense.
Unable to concentrate without the numerous forms of stimulation that they all use to get them through the day without actually paying attention to anything, the poor darlings complained that they didn't know what to do with themselves with one student saying "I stared at the wall for a little bit" - before surrendering to boredom and taking some sleeping pills to help get through the rest of the boring tech-free day.
They should be grateful they didn't have to get through a Sunday in 1989.

ReplyDelete1989? That was when TV channels closed for the evening, and all students got enough sleep to concentrate during the following morning too.
Seriously, though, I would love to see a study where a group of students is separated from their peers say, at the age of 6 or 7.
One group would have access to SMS text, social networking sites, and Internet forums, and the others would not.
The two groups would then flourish in their own environments for 10 years without mixing with any of the members of the other test group. Thereafter the individual group members of both parties would be tested individually to see who can form coherent sentences with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Also reviewed would be the subjects’ ability to recall information (such as a telephone number) for any longer than it takes to type into a keypad, or to be aware of their surroundings when walking in a place populated with any other human.
Cavemen & Cavewomen used to grunt because of their lack of language & social skills. Evolution is a wonderful thing!

1989: Scott Safran, the world record holder for the arcade version of "Asteroids" (& the holder of the longest-standing video game high score in history) died. He held the record score (41,336,440) from 14 November 1982 only to be defeated by John McAllister (who achieved a score of 41,338,740) over 27 years later. Both players took 3 days of non-stop playing to reach their final scores.
