Logitech Driving Force Mini Review

Didn't want to say anything until i got one and tested it in case is was a pile of fail, but Maplins are knocking out some Logitech Driving Force wheels for the very reasonable sum of £24.99. Looking at their website it looks like stores only got a few in each so if you're in the market for a new nonwaveystick or arm flailing invisible controler then i can give this the Tone thumbs up seal of approval.

The Driving Force is the one without the foot pedals and has flappy paddle style levers, which are easy to configure in GT to throttle and brake. The Force feedback is very nice and strong, settings go from 0 to 10 and it feels well built for the cash, unlike that horrible horrible Trust wheel i tried a couple of weeks back, The LDF has true 1:1 movement and the slightest turn is translated onto your screen wheel. nice.

Mine, once set up was strangely about 15' off true clockwise, but upon removing the base cover i saw what needed to be done. i marked the gearing with a pen at the point the wheel thought was true, then moved it around to where i wanted it and marked the gear again. i then set it back to the first mark and carefully disconnected a mini connector off the motor, moved teh wheel back 15' anticlockwise and replaced the connector. job done.

I've also, already, covered the center boss with carbon wrap, because thats the sort of thing i have laying around this place! :)

oh, and footstool and bungee cords not included in the box, but give a great firm base and bring the wheel upto the right height when leaning back against the sofa.

  2. after a bit if practice i am now comfortable with this wheel. last night didn't count due to necking rather a lot of Lambrini (classy!). i find using this with in-car view puts it into it's own and my driving is now smoother than it's ever been. i've got it set to force feedback 10 and professional setting. If you try to grab a handfull of brake it will lock you up and spin, you can get away with that on a joypad mostly, but the flappy paddles rotate with the wheel and are great for fingertip feathering of the controls.

  3. I have a Logitech GT Force which I bought with PS2 Gran Turismo 3, it's a force feedback wheel but simply put I'm way too rubbish to enjoy using it, at least I was way back then. Will try it on GT5 and report back.

  4. @ Jimmy-san - is that the one with blue grip zone? I find the pedals you got with the lower end wheels are just unusable as there isn't any feel to them, well, maybe it's just me. but configuring my flappy paddles into throttle/brake makes a true world of difference to me. Am up to winning 'S' class races with it on professional physics after a few hours of practice. i used the twisty Eiger Track to train with it on.

To me that's what i want in a wheel :D be interesting to compare my wheel times vs arcade stick times vs joypad.

  5. yep, blue grips. the pedals were a mare as I recall, although I don't think I tried that hard, it's probably had under an hours use before it was relegated to the attic!

  6. Nothin' wrong with a bit of Lambrini 'Tone. Such a fine and complex wine is of course best matched with a tube of barbecue flavour Pringles.

The wheel fits a treat on that footstool mate - is it an Ikea POÄNG? I've got one of those!

  7. Lambrini and Pringles, high cuisine. :D

the footstool is a Bentwood, basically an Ikea rip off from the famed designer Argoos, feels like it was made for bungeeing racing wheels too. Just the right height for going over your legs when dossing on the floor. May have to chop the legs off a kitchen chair to make a low racing seat next ;D

  9. @tone - my mate got rear seats from a mini - can seat two with a foldout armrest, plus the sat level with no modification = job done quickly, plus really comfortable. red leather too!
